If you haven’t been already and experienced the culinary zen that is Yong Green Food in Brunswick st, you’re missing out. Literally my favourite vegan restaurant (so therefore if you’re trying to impress me, take me here) Yong Green tops the list with organic, raw, vegan, gluten free and onion/garlic free options. So basically anyone can eat here!
The menu is an Asian- western fusion, with some dishes being on the more traditional Japanese side (think, miso soup and teriyaki “chicken”) but you can also feed your less adventurous friends vegan nachos or raw white chocolate cheesecake— drooling yet??
It can be a little on the pricier side, however it’s well worth the dining experience. I typically order an entree and a main which usually sets me back at around $35-$40. If you add dessert, which I don’t, it’s a bit more. But I’d take this nourishing goodness over lord of the fries any day!
BEST PICK?
My go to is always the Macro Dragon Bowl ($20) which is a giant salad and brown rice bowl filled with cooked mushrooms, wakame seaweed with a vegan mayo, purple kraut, tempeh and chia seeds. It also comes with a bowl of chickpea miso soup and a dish of a tahini sauce which was INCREDIBLE. If I wasn’t so keen to try the whole menu I’d honestly be fine with just that!!
I also ordered the Summer Rolls ($14) but I can’t remember if they were actually called that. Pretty much just rice paper rolls with salad and avo— nothing special and honestly was a little disappointed. Because they weren’t stuffed with noodles (just veggies) they were a bit blasé even with the sauce. Tasted fresh and healthy though.
My gal Gemma ordered the Teriyaki “Chicken” which was pretty much wheat mock meat with veggies and a bunch of brown rice, all smothered in teriyaki sauce (which looked awesome!) We saw heaps of other people in the restaurant order the same thing so apparently it’s a crowd favourite!!
The last thing we ordered was the raw vegan white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake, made from cashew nuts and coconut oil. This thing is a masterpiece, and something Gemma can’t go without when we venture here. It’s a must try! (Though not something I like to eat)
