Ditch the cereal. Toss the milk. And don’t even think about jumping on the breakfast burrito bandwagon. It’s 2015, people, time to update your plate from the get-go…breakfast time!!
It really surprises me that most people in our modern-day world will have the most negative start to their day (filled with coffee, mirror bashing, fatty breakfasts) and expect to last till 4pm. Why do you think so many rant about the 3.30-itis? That 2pm crash? It doesn’t make sense for us, as busy people, to not have sustained energy all the way through to bed-time. We should be energetic all day long…and we CAN be!
I’m a strong believer in that everything we do and everything we put into our body contributes to our immediate level of vitality…you are what you eat, think and do! So when it comes to breakfast, it’s just as important of a meal as any– a healthy breakfast builds the platform from which we jump headfirst into our day! Do you want to stumble through the next 24 hours? Or leap into it and see the day with excitement and anticipation?? Let me tell you, coffee with bacon and eggs won’t do that. It’ll leave you dehydrated, grumpy, and eventually fattened out. Eeek!

I know for a while when ‘brunch’ became a massive hipster trend and huge ‘hearty’ gourmet breakfasts with a buffet on the one plate was all the instagram rage, but in the long-term, where does that leave our health? In actual fact, breakfast should be the simplest meal of the day. What REALLY gets me going is either a mono-meal of a fruit or a MASSIVE smoothie.
MONO-meal, noun, pretty much a meal that consists of only one type of food, where the individual can eat as much as they want of that single type of food
Why do I sometimes mono-meal? Well to keep it simple, it keeps it simple ;) . As we know from typical human biology, different enzymes are required in our digestive system to break down different substances. Amylase breaks down starch, protease breaks down proteins and lipase breaks down fatty acids. The issue when we eat a combination of foods, requiring a cocktail of enzymes, they can dilute each other and no single enzyme is working as effectively anymore. That is why our digestion is compromised and we see so many digestive disorders these days. Our health begins with digestion!! If we can’t even get that right, no amount of wholesome, organic food will save us.
Therefore by eating only one type of food at a time for breakfast (and preferably lunch too), only one enzyme is required and digestion occurs optimally. Combining a range of fruits is great too, but when you're combining fruit with fats and meats and other foods things can get a little messy if you have a sensitive stomach.
HOWEVER
You can’t just mono-meal ANYTHING. If you mono-meal boiled eggs, pretty sure you’d have a heart-attack by noon. The only thing I will ever recommend mono-mealing is FRESH FRUIT. That’s all. Everyone loves fruit. Biologically we seek and enjoy the sugar, the glucose, it provides us with. It contains all the water, nutrients, and fibre we need for smooth, rapid digestion AND nourishment.

On the water note, fruit is the highest water-content food on this planet. This makes fruit one of the best foods for our natural detoxification and elimination. Think about the dinner you ate last night. If you haven’t been to the bathroom this morning (let’s be honest), it’s still technically sitting within you rotting and putrifying. GROSS!
It’s even worse if you’re a meat-eater and you have the dead flesh of another animal rotting in your bowels. Good luck with that.
I also recommend before breakfast that everyone drinks at least 1 litre of pure, filtered water before they even have ANY FOOD. Like we just talked about, you need to be getting rid of whatever food is sitting in your bowels while you were sleeping and couldn’t eliminate it. Water helps you flush that out, as will the fruit. Except, well, the fruit tastes good.
So really, a true Glowing Green Breakfast is a litre of water and a massive mass of your favourite fruit. Bananas, dates, apples, watermelon…whatever! Even a banana smoothie or a date shake will suffice, plus you’ll be getting even MORE hydration! And if I’m just going to entice you a little bit more, you will lose weight. No doubt. All the friends I’ve ever convinced to try this (a great transition to Rawtill4) have practically seen ab-lines their stomachs have been so flat. It’s incredible!
I challenge you to ditch the coffee and the granola bars and start your day with REAL FOOD for a change, and fruit is so damn delicious I doubt I’ll hear you complain. Get glowing!!
